The facts about "green" and "environmentally-friendly" cleaning detergents - and why you don't need them!
THE FACTS:
- Many businesses support chemical refills, due to their existing contracts with chemical cleaning suppliers.
- Clever marketing companies are dedicated to selling you more and more "green" and "environmentally-friendly" cleaning products. These are not required to provide a professional cleaning result.
- Chemical-Free Cleaning contracts can’t get their foot in the door and get turned away because “chemicals and bleach are cheaper”.
- Small and medium sized accommodation providers could spend less than $665 on cleaning supplies yearly but opt in for chemical-refills, which is up to 4-times more expensive.
- Contract Cleaners are facing an ongoing exposure to chemicals. A survey stated they would prefer chemical-free cleaning methods.
Bindy Naus is a well know presenter on Dangers of Chemicals and has first hand experiences for the above claims.
Bindy has over 25 years’ experience in the domestic and commercial cleaning industry:
I can’t believe that we banned single use plastic but not the plastic bottles of toxic chemicals that sit under your sink or in your laundry. I am a theatre nurse and spent over 8 years in Europe lecturing at hospital conferences on infection control practices. Many people try to improve their cleaning habits and use vinegar. It’s a good start, however, using vinegar to clean is still using a chemical compound and isn’t actually helping as it only provides one part of the cleaning process – the acid. For total cleaning system you would require an acid and an alkaline.
I conducted tests with Australian laboratories, which have shown that the physical removal of bacteria and micro-organisms by scrubbing is actually more effective than the anti-microbial effect of cleaning agents used (killing bacteria). After a lifetime of cleaning the ‘normal way’, many people think: 'Won’t there still be germs growing if you do not use chemicals as you have not sprayed any disinfectant on the surface?' But what you might not know is that if you have a totally dry, clean surface the germs cannot grow, much in the same way as if we as humans do not have food and water we cannot survive; bacteria cannot survive without water and nutrients. It’s as simple as that!
"After 25 years the public is still not convinced that water alone will do the job."
Thanks to the message of clever marketing companies 2019 dedicated to selling you more and more products usually comprised of “environmentally-friendly”, “safe” and “green” cleaning cocktails. Not to mention the plastic containers!
Bindy conducted various surveys over the years and receives phone calls and emails daily. People are asking which form of “liquid” is recommended for a ‘green’ clean! The simple answer is: water! In fact using vinegar or lemon juice on surfaces such as marble or limestone can actually stain or even pit your surfaces or bench tops. Bindy has been fighting against the trend to disinfect everything: most cleaning agents might kill the bacteria but do not remove them and can contribute to create a super bug which is resistant to antibiotics. All we need to do is go back to the basics and use only water, which removes the bacteria and leaves behind only a dry, clean surface. No chemical residue!
